About

WHAT IS Gain staging?

Gain staging is an audio recording principle: set and monitor the incoming audio signal from the start for optimal outbound levels.

Set the right level

at every stage

In an audio signal chain, a clean recording depends on getting the gain right at each stage and watching it as the mix builds. Push too hard, and it goes into the red, leading to distortion. Too soft and it gets buried in the mix, consuming resources without adding value.

Litigation operations work the same way.

When you sequence the work, build in headroom for deadlines, and, most importantly, monitor each stage, you leave less room for problems to grow. Put the right people on the right tasks, and you improve work quality while keeping costs in line with what the matter truly requires.

Hi, I'm James

I specialize in complex litigation discovery and pretrial preparation. With nearly 20 years of experience managing high-stakes matters, I bring senior-level execution and processes that produce defensible, trial-ready work.

Partners and clients get updates that address the technical issue, current status, court-rule implications, potential risks, and next steps. I also produce traditional matter-related work product, including motion and discovery drafts, production summaries, and testimony analysis by issue or page-line.

Substantive work product for the partner, the client, or the record.

How I work

Three things I hold to

  • 01

    Right level, right task

Match tasks to skill, judgment, and cost so attorneys can focus on legal strategy without sacrificing quality. Operational work belongs with the people trained to run it, not absorbed into associate hours, particularly if resources are available.

  • 02

    Process over fire drills

Build the workflow, sequence, and responsibilities early so the matter does not become reactive. Review the process as the work progresses, then adjust what is not working and carry those improvements forward.

  • 03

    Accuracy creates speed

Careful discovery and evidence management reduce rework, control costs, and make the team faster when deadlines tighten and trials approach. The cleaner the work upstream, the less time the team loses correcting it later.
